Otfried,

   That's good to know. According to the Ipe doc, cropbox is needed only with
early versions of pdflatex. I've turned it off because I have a newish
version of pdflatex installed.

   I've drawn all the figures I need for next week's presentation, but I'll
give this a try on the next one. The extra space is not passed from LyX to
the resultant .pdf file. That was my concern, and it turns out to be
unfounded.
