Asarum hartwegii should grow well on the bench if you wrap the legs in
copper flashing. That should take care of the slugs.

In the garden, Sluggo is supposed to work, but my experience with it has
been spotty at best.

Another technique for the bench is to lay a band of salt around the pots.
Salt does a slug in quite nicely. I've used two concentric plastic saucer=s.
the inner one holds the pot and the space in the outer one from edge to
inner saucer is half full of table salt. It does tend to get crusty and
need to be replaced.
