We need to get you a grant so you can wander off and study this
one....;-) You are far more curious than I. To me, it just "sometimes they
do that".
I would not go back and begin digging around to see what they are up
to... unless you know the exact spot you could end up slicing the tuber in
half. Also they just went into dormancy and are sulking because they were
disturbed. Would a second disturbance help matters?? Perhaps a grant is in
order...
