Subject: Re: Arisaema taiwanense

Duncan,

Note it's A. taiwanense NOT taiwanensis in spite of the fact that some
growers continue to label it wrong.

I grow mine in 3 9/16 square x 4 1/4 deep pots for as long as 3 years and
in 3 9/16 square x 4 1/4 deep bands with at least 8" soil below them for
5 years. Being so constrained, they make lots of offsets and the leaves
get all tangled up. I'd space them out about 12" if you want little or no
overlap. Mine have been close spaced, pot-to-pot.

Incidentally, the pots and bands are really great. They come from
Anderson Die & Mfg. Co., Portland, Oregon, 1-503-654-5629, but they only
sell wholesale. They might be able to locate a retailer near you.
I grow seedlings on from the towel/baggie stage in these pots stacked 8
to a capillary mat unit from
Gardener's Supply. Usually 9 seedlings to a pot. Then transplant them to
individual pots when they
have their second dormancy. Because they're square, you can stack up a
lot of plants in a really compact space. By using the bands over a
substrate of soil, the root room problem is solved. Many of my Arisaema
have bloomed while still growing in the bands.

See the posting to Jim McClements - the A. taiwanense not only bloomed,
it made 10 offsets - all from
a 3 9/16 square x 4 1/4 deep pot. Incidentally, Tony Avent introduced me
to these pots. They're standard
at Plant Delights Nursery and are used on mats with overhead irrigation.
I use mist heads in one nursery and drip irrigation in another. Both work
very well in these small areas. Of course, the capillary mat unit is
just super for growing seedlings indoors. I only have to add water once a
week at most.
