Subject: Biarum davisii help please.
Hi all,
5 years after buying 5 Biarum davisii from Jacques Amand I finally have =
two
flowers. Thew are quite different in their markings, one being spotted =
as
expected, the other without spots. Both are quite beautiful but not
entirely like the pictures in Martin and Rix or the other pics on the =
net.
Both the spathe and spadix are much longer. Any comments please. They =
are
growing in a shady position - could this affect spathe/spadix length?
Greg Ruckert
Greg - it sounds to me as if you've got Biarum davisii ssp. =
marmarisense, the Turkish subspecies, which has a distinctly more =
elongate inflorescence than the dumpy ones illustrated in the book (by =
Martyn Rix) you mention. They are ssp. davisii, from Crete, and much =
more attractive than marmarisense. I have a strong suspicion that your =
plants may have been wild collected from Turkey - lots were!
