I agree with Carlo, although I do add osmcote if the plant is to stay in the
same mix for more than one growing season.  I also liquid feed, depending on
the plant.
There are different types of slow release fertilizers.  Some are water
soluable.  More water more fertilizer.  Others will release depending on the
soil temperature.  The higher the temp. the more fertilizer.  Be carefull as
to the type you use, and this depends on your growing practices and
conditions.
