Thanks, Otfried. Maintaining just one PDF file for the illustrations
is indeed really nice, but, but ... :-)

If you script the generation of individual PNG images (in addition to
PDF ones), you can see the images within the flow of the text, by
using Emacs, enabling "iimage-mode", and adding a comment under each
\includegraphics:

    \includegraphics{mylabel}
    % image::png/mylabel.png[]
