I noticed anti-alising makes updates slower when the document is large. I have a
ipe document that is large than 2MB (all lines) and it is a pain to work with.
However, when I turned off anti-aliasing in the code things got better. Turning
off double buffering did not make any changes.

Would it be possible to have the anti-alias as an option in preferences? I noted
it seem to be prepared for that since AntiAlias is a flag in ipecanvas.cpp.

PS. The reason for working with such a large document is that I exported an
image from matlab to eps and then converted it to Ipe.
