Dear Aad van Beek,

Many thanks for your message -the first that I have received after joining
the AEG!

The scapigerous Impatiens species found in the Nilgiris might be difficult
to grow there, but perhaps I could collect some seed from a few shrubby
ones. Do you have any in mind? I will have to collect the seeds and then
send them onto you. Do let me know. Don't worry about reimbursing!

Warmly,

Tarun

Hello Tarun,

Excuse me for the intrusion. First of all glad you became a member of the
AEG. In the past I had some good result growing ariseama's from seeds listed
on the AEG seed list.

But the reason I mail you is not because of the ariseama's but because you
wrote you did some work in the field of Impatiens. Lately I try to grow some
Impatiens myself but it is always hard to get seeds from species. I wonder
if it is possible if you have any seeds available from Impatiens species and
are willing to send to me in Holland. Of course I can reimburse the cost
involved if you have paypal.

Greetings,

Aad van Beek

Dear Eric,

Many thanks indeed for your response and for accepting me into AEG. Please
do confirm that I have become a member as I have not received any messages
thus far.

I have also done some work on the Impatiens of the Nilgiris and published
three new taxa in the Nordic Journal of Botany in December 2016, and gave
them all Toda-related nomenclature, viz.: Impatiens taihmushkulni; I.
kawttyana; I. nilgirica var nawttyana. Do let me know if you visit this part
of the world sometime!

Warmly,

Tarun

Dear Dr Eric,

1. A list of your collection of Arisaema species with numbers of
plants:

         Mature: A. tuberculatum (one plant)

Flowered: A. leschenaultii (one); A. translucens (three); A.
jacquemontii (one, this is from the Nilgiris, south India, not the
Himalayan)

         Has set seed: None

Immature: A. jacquemontii (four plants all from the Nilgiris,
south India); A. translucens (two)

2. Zone: Upper Nilgiri Hills, South Western Ghats; c.2000m above MSL

3. E-mail: kwattein at bsnl.in

4. Post: Dr Tarun Chhabra, Dental Clinic, Hospital Road, Ooty-643001,
Nilgiris, Tamil Nadu, India.

The rediscovery of A.translucens and A. tuberculatum was published by us in
Phytotaxa in 2017. The photos of these along with the ethnobotanic links
with the indigenous Toda people appear in my book The Toda Landscape:
Explorations in Cultural Ecology (Harvard University Press; Harvard Oriental
Series vol. 79). In addition to the above-mentioned four species, am
familiar with A. tortuosum and A.barnesii as found here in the Nilgiris.

I am a full time practising dentist based in Ooty. Greatly looking forward
to your response.

With warm wishes,

Tarun Chhabra
