[Arisaema-l] ID problem: fargesii or franchetianum

Attached are 3 photos from today. There is what I think clearly fits the
Gusman description of the typical franchetianum with somewhat smaller leaves
which do not overlap. Spathe has the extreme curvature like the other one
but this one has a relatively long tail from the spathe tip and little (if
any) recurving in the mouth margins. This one is planted right next to the
other one but came up and bloomed just a little later and is in full bloom
now. (Chen Yi sold me this one years ago as A. prazeri, but of course it
looks nothing like it- I think Chen Yi must have just drawn names at random
out of a hat to put with their Arisaema tubers).
Third picture is from above both plants, showing the difference in the
leaves.
By the way, I would be curious if anyone has had good/bad luck growing any
of my seed contributions outside in the garden, particularly you Europeans,
as we have much hotter weather here in the southeastern USA than most of
Europe. Please e-mail me at 2csh at bellsouth.net. Thanks.

Very interesting indeed! As you say, your specimen, that has a spathe of
franchetianum and a leaf of fargesii, shows that both could well be
considered one species only. With regard to the variation of the species,
fargesii should then be a synonym of franchetianum, not even a variety. But
in the Flora of China, the distinction is based on the shape of the
inflorescence and both species are taken into consideration.
All the best.

The plant in the attached photos was Chen Yi number A-14, identified as
Arisaema fargesii, but we know that Chen Yi IDs are almost worthless.
Nevertheless, that is how I tagged the plant, which put out a spectacular
bloom this year.
Reading my Gusman book, it says under fargesii (p. 252) : "Close to A.
franchetianum, from which it differs by only a few characters, A. fargesii
could even be considered a variety of the former."
The huge central leaflet (see first picture) would lean towards fargesii.
However, the extreme curvature of the spathe limb beyond a full circle is
typical of the variety of A. franchetianum known as purpureogaleatum (see
page 255 of the book). But the last photo shows the recurving of the
mouth-margins (like the fargesii description). Finally, the end of the
spathe tip (see 2d photo) seems to me as intermediate between the long
thread of the franchetianum and the narrow shorter extension of fargesii.
Any of you Arisaema experts got a good idea? Or maybe this plant is evidence
that there is just one species.
