A discussion about what people grow where & how sounds good=2C but a si=mple=
list

of average minimum temperature tolerances doesn't begin to cover all the =pe=
rmutations involved.

An example would be the species from the Himalayas. Several of them are =te=
chnically winter hardy

for USDA zones 5 or 6=2C but I find them harder to grow outdoors than e=qual=
ly cold tolerant Japanese species.

The difference: I have dry summers & wet winters with little or no snow c=ov=
er=2C basically the opposite

conditions the Himalayan species enjoy.

About 15 years ago I bought a Trochodendron aralioides seedling. The com=mo=
n Hardiness rating at the time was zone 8.

It's still alive and happy here in zone 6A and now I believe it's listed =as=
zone 5. A few years back we had about three

years where I could overwinter typically zone 7 plants outdoors without a=ny=
additional contrivances.  Then things went

back to normal and they all croaked. So I don't put too much stock in th=e =
USDA zones.
