I just found a great product called Thrifty-Sorb  http://www.moltan.com/I=ndustrial_DE_Clay/industrial_absorbents.html   http://www.moltan.com/MSDS=/MSDS_pdf/MSDS_CLAY/MSDS_THRIFTYSORB.pdf
at my local Pep Boys Automotive center, 40lb bag for ~ $7. Dumped some in=to a bucket of water outside to reduce dust (careful, don't inhale!) and =washed it through a sieve-like aquatic plant pot. Using it now for Cyprip=ediums, but may work as a seedling mix.
