Black Jack-pusillum

Hello,
A.t.ssp. pusillum has really glossy backed leaves and
is fairly small overall. Most of the time it only has
one leaf per shoot and the spathe tends to not have as
distinct lines in comparison to typical triphyllum in
those I have seen. The color is rare darker than a
brown dusted green except inside the spathe where the
lines merge into a solid block of color versus really
sharp lines. The spathe limb tends to be a bit longer
also, over half the length of the inflorescence in the
collections I grow. The stems are typically one color
vs. the snake skin patchiness of triphyllum. The
cataphyll is still nicely marked though. Possibly the
reason it was considered a parent of the the ssp
quinatum? It also has rhizomatous growths to several
centimeters that produce new tubers. Pusillum also
prefers swampy woodland conditions, as in standing
water, rather than normal woodlands.
All my localities are in GA (the now extirpated(?)
Trillium georgianum site), South Carolina around
Hartwell near Clemson, and in Alabama near Huntsville.
Everyone of the sites has had plants with black flecks
on the leaves (15-40%) like someone was staining
furniture walnut colored and splattered some on the
leaves.
I don't really see how stewardsonii is considered a
subsp. The spathe, phenology, and tubers are so
distinct from A.t.ssp.triphyllum. And, for those of us
that have seen and grow quinatum, we know it is very
distinct, both in morphology and phenology.
All the best,
Aaron
