Hi Adam and All,
I contacted Catchflower in hopes of adding to my tropical/rhizomatus
collection and FINALLY got a reply weeks later. Most of the ones I wante=d
(that I couldn't find in the book) were unavailable, but I would have
ordered just for the heck of it to see what showed up. Of the six availa=ble
at the time of their reply, I knew 3 or 4 were definitely out for me. He
(she?) said they "would come up this summer with a considerable variety o=f
Arisaema" so I decided to wait.
My hopes are that they are collecting the wintergreen varieties like A.
rhizomatus and that bunch NOW as they should be heading into their summer
dormancy (I think). I've had trouble with this wintergreen group that I'=ve
received from Chen Yi because she cuts the leaves off actively growing
plants and sends them along with the others that are actually dormant. I
planted them in very course soil and hoped that they'd just go dormant an=d
not rot during the summer. Well, to my surprise, they all sprouted a sho=rt
leaf. I have no idea what to expect for the rest of the summer - will th=is
leaf stick around or will it eventually go dormant as summer really heats
up? At least they didn't rot.
I'd love to hear from others (HINT HINT) growing the tropicals - tubers,
rhizomes, evergreen, wintergreen, deciduous, whatever!!!
By the way, Adam, I think you are on to something you wrote in an old ema=il
to the list. The next order of dormant tubers I receive from Chen Yi WIL=L
NOT go directly into soil. I'll store them like you mentioned and plant
them when they show signs of needing to be planted and the temps are righ=t.
I had much better luck this past spring with the different soil, but stil=l
lost a couple. I have some of the earlier ones already going dormant whi=le
others still haven't sprouted but the tuber and bud still look fine. Don='t
know what that's all about. Time to soak everyone with "Subdue" and spra=y
"Messenger" again.
