Thanks for prompt answer. I know the geodic soil you speak of in =
southern Indiana. Sticky when wet, lousy drainage, except that you're =
on a hill, so most of it drains off. Not unlike the the soil in =
western Turkey where these things are native, and where one of the big =
wholesale nurseries is. I suspect that the other important parameter is ==
the sun exposure. Mine may not have gotten enough. I didn't want to =
plant the stinkers too close to the bedroom window. Adam Fikso in =
Glenview, USDA Zone 5a

Adam,

I think the location is really important, but temperature doesn't seem ==
to be the factor. I bought five Dracunculus [bulbs? Tubers?] three =
years ago and of the five, one didn't survive at all (it was planted =
next to the house on the south side), three are doing okay but are still ==
small and kind of weak (they are in different spots in the garden), and =
this one that has done well is on the side of a very steep bank on the =
south side of the gardens outside of our driveway, gets a lot of sun but ==
a lot of wind/weather exposure, but excellent drainage. It is in heavy =
red clay soil with geodes. Maybe the red clay with excellent drainage =
is the key.

Stacy? What sort of soil and pre-wintering treatment do you give it? ==
. I've tried it here in the Chicago area a few times and it's never =
survived a mild winter with only 2 days of 0=B0 F . Sandy or gravelly==
soil perhaps? Adam
