Arisaemas and tissue culture. We were frustrated that many of the
great arisaema forms either didn't set seed or come true from seed. =In
2001, we spoke with the folks at Shady Oaks Nursery in Minnesota about
tissue culturing arisaemas. Since we all understood this would not =be
a real moneymaker for the lab, it was done more as a favor, especially&nb=sp;
since their lab manager was also interested in arisaema. It is my
understanding that those who tried arisaema tc in the past had problems
with contamination as well as overcoming dormancy in vitro. Shady O=aks
agreed to try and have since tissue cultured 9 different arisaema
clones. From their work, we have offered Arisaema ringens 'Bl=ack
Mamba', Arisaema kishidae 'Jack Frost' and Arisaema triphyllum 'Black
Jack'. Next year, we will introduce Arisaema taiwanense 'Silver Her=on'
...a beautiful pewter-silver form, originally from Heronswood. More
really exciting clones will follow.

Tissue culture will not drop the price of arisaemas since the lab still
has to send them through a dormancy before selling them. Additional=ly,
once we receive the plants, they require (depending on the species) 1-2
years in ground beds before they are ready for sale. What tissue
culture will do is make available many fabulous forms that were
formerly confined to a single garden. It is also our hope tha=t better
production will reduce the demand for wild collected species,
especially those that are already quite rare. As the lab has extra
plants, they will gradually make them available to more nurseries. =I
hope you find this as exciting as we do.
Until I heard about 'Black Jack' I wasn't aware that any arisaemas were
being propagated by tissue culture.

It might be of interest to all of us to hear a bit more about it.
