Thanks Mike for the detailed explanation. This email is a keeper as I
come across Arisaema all the time in my search for southeastern
Trillium. The distinguishing features are now starting to make sense.

Years ago, I received a mess of Chinese Arisaema, all planted among
Trillium in the shade garden. While many did not survive our wet
winters (or hot summers), quite a few did. I'm guessing that I have
somewhere between 5 to 10 species that appear regularly in the garden.

A few are in bloom now so I'll have to start reporting to the list so
people will have an idea of what species will survive our wet zone 7
winters.
