The situation has been as I described yesterday for approximately two yea=rs
now. Enforcement started out very lax, but it has apparently been
tightened up steadily the last year or so.

You all now know what the situation is. How to deal with it is up to the
Powers that Be in AEG. There are several options, but ALL involve phyto
certificates for all seeds being shipped into the USA. When this arose,
the Cyclamen Society (UK) simply stopped sending any seeds to US members,=I
believe. AGS may have done likewise. I've since dropped out of both
groups, so I don't know how they are handling it now.

You want my suggestion? No? Here it is anyway: Ship all seeds for USA
members in bulk with ONE phyto certificate to an agent in the USA. Said
agent should get a USDA plant import permit before starting out. Said age=nt
would, upon receiving the legally imported seeds, fill the specific
requests and forward to the individual recipients in the U.S. I am not
volunteering for that duty -- I have a plant business to run.

There have been extended discussions of this situation in numerous plant
lists, especially over a year ago in our sister-list on Surfnet, Alpine-L=;
but also, I believe, in the International Bulb Society list, in the Pacif=ic
Bulb Society list, and probably in others I've forgotten. I'm a bit
surprised that not everyone in this group has noticed this little problem
before.

I still have not received any notice of confiscation and destruction of
seeds. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Regards,
Jim Shields
