I have a nice little clump of this species established at the top of the
rock garden and coming into bloom now, and am wondering how other people
have done with it in their gardens? The Gusmans' book (if I'm reading it
correctly - Guy?) would seem to suggest that the cultural requirements of
this subspecies are hard to meet; but I haven't found it so at all. The
site it's in is well-drained, but certainly not completely dry in winter
or early spring. I got my stock originally from Mojmir Pavelka (Czech
Republic), who had obtained it from someone else who I believe collected
it in the wild. I got good seed-set last summer, and have lots of little
seedlings now; and the flowers, opening today (in advance of and well
above the leaves) reminded me to ask who else grows it, and with what
results. It's a charming plant - much larger flowers than ssp.
abbreviatum, and much, much earlier (I don't think my abbreviatums are
even up yet, much less blooming). Are many people growing it?

Ellen
