Hello All. The A-10 I got from Chen Yi turns out to be A. asperatum both
this year and last. (In my estimation.) It did not bloom last year so the=re
was some uncertainty. All stems are distinctly asperate.
The spathe is somewhat twisted and slightly involute, (injured?) so it =is
not altogether symmetrical . Overall length of the spathe is about 29
centimeters rising to an total height of 39. Overall height of the plant =is
49 centimeters. The spathe is streaked with red pigmentation on the upp=er
portion inside. Exterior of the spathe is distinctly ribbed. The spad=ix
is yellow, slender, pointed and somewhat upturned, reminiscent of elepha=s,
with the lower part thicker and a dull, dark red covered with bright gra=y
thecae.
It has been opening for the last few days. Base diameter of the stem i=s
about 4.5 centimeters in its largest dimension. Ovoid in cross section if
the cataphyll is included.
I may have a nepenthoides coming up after I thought that I had lost them
all. This was planted within a few inches of the foundation of the house,
where the drainage is sharper and the temperature is warmer. Exterio=r
air temperature went to zero F. for two days this winter with no snow
cover. Adam Fikso in Glenview, IL USDA Zone 5a
