I have tried to divide my A.ringens in the spring by cutting it up with =a sharp knife and then drying the pieces for a few days before =replanting. The off-sets have always rotted and I have been lucky to =save the main tuber.
However last autumn I was digging in the garden and put the spade =straight through the centre of my only A. candiddissimum cutting the =dormant growing point in half. Having stopped crying I thought nothing =would be lost by cutting it up into pieces each with a dormant bud. This =I did and then soaked the pieces in a systemic fungicide overnight. I =then stored the pieces in damp sand through the winter in a frost free =garage. Every piece looked good on repotting a few weeks ago and they =are now in early growth.
i have only ever seen the roots start to emerge before the shoot starts =into growth a sure sign it is time to get on with the repotting.
I divide my arums on repotting in July.
