Why do you say --"but"--  to introduce the idea of line breeding,
segregation, etc.?.  What I wrote  does not stand in contrast to the other,
nor contradict it.  I am not unfamiliar with the issues here.  I was
addressing the idea presented  earlier-- that hybridization was neither
desirable or not necessary because one could develop desirable plants by
(what seemed to be the idea of) having a plan, continuous inbreeding and
selecting for desired characteristics.  My point is that one cannot --if the
desired characteristics are not there in the first place-- either as
genotype or phenotype.  Further, this often leads to lethality in the case
of certain serial alleles of, say, coat color in mice, dwarfism in cattle,
nonviability of the embryos, lack of endosperm, etc. In plants this usually
doesn't matter too much, one merely discards the failures.
