But how can a mature Arisaema amurense have only three leaflets, I asked.

Guy Gusman has put me out of my misery.

The new Gusman & Gusman book says of amurense, on p. 239 : "Usually, small
male specimens have one
leaf with three leaflets while mature female plants have two 5-foliolate
leaves."

>From this I incorrectly assumed that plants with 3 leaflets must be
immature.

Guy has kindly taken the time to clarify:

'A male specimen may be either a young plant or an "old" plant, which was
female, set seed the year before and returns to a male stade. I observed
2-leaved plants with 3+3, 5+3 and 5+5 leaflets. The number of leaflets
varies from year to year. For this reason, we wrote
"usually..." '

Bliss.
