Jim,
When your AEG Info-Pack arrives, you'll see that we have numerous members
from the South
Temperate zone as well as some from the tropical zone and even one in
Alaska. This group
is truly diverse.
If you're interested in species Zantedeschia as opposed to the many
hybrids being developed
in the Netherlands and New Zealand, here is a short bibliography for you.
Zantedeschia Literature
Compiled by G.R. Stilwell 03-09-00
Letty, C. 1973. The Genus Zantedeschia. Bothalia 11,1 & 2: 5-26.
Singh, Y. A.E. van Wyk & H. Baijnath 1996. Taxonomic notes on the genus
Zantedeschia Spreng. (Araceae) in South Africa. S. Afr.
J. Bot. 62(6): 321-324.
Singh, Y. 1995. Know your Arums, An easy guide to identify members of the
genus Zantedeschia. Veld & Flora, June =9195: 54-5.
Yao, J. L., R. E. Rowland, & D. Cohen. 1994. Karyotype studies in the
genus Zantedeschia. South African J. of Botany 60:4-7.
The key paper is Singh 1995 Know your Arums. It is a visual KEY in living
color with descriptions as well.
You can still get a copy from the Bot. Soc. of South Africa at
Kirstenbosch.
<botsocsa at gem.co.za> It's well worth it.
I also have other Zantedeschia information in WordPerfect and Lotus 1-2-3
form. I've been trying to
compile a list of all named hybrids, but they seem to appear faster than
I can type them in.
We're zone 7a here and I've been growing Z. aethiopica, Z. albomaculata,
Z. elliottiana, and Z. rehmanii
outdoors for years. There are also many hybrids out there. But, zone 7a
is not nearly
as cold as zone 5 as you know. Still, I'd be inclined to try them in a
warm microclimate.
But, probably not Z. aethiopica since it's evergreen and has no sense
when it comes to frost.
