Here it is not the moles -- it's the d--n chipmunks. My cats are too lazy=to
be good and faithful hunters. (Being Siamese, they will not go outside if
there is a speck of snow on the ground). The fox population is beginning =to
come back, so there may be hope. The chipmunks will dig up and carry off =any
Arisaema tuber that is not afforded screen protection. Before Ray told me
about this, I lost some wonderful tubers I had in pots on the front porch=to
squirrels. It was interesting to find exotic Arisaema in the woods the
following Spring, though. They carried them off, and fortunately -- at le=ast
with some of them -- buried them deep enough so that they were not lost -=-
just mislaid. Some did well in the Primula beds, which being very damp, w=as
not the best environment.

This reminds me of the best way to get rid of moles, according to my
father-in-law. He says one should put ground glass in their holes. He
complained, alas, about not finding someone to hold the mole . . . [A li=ttle
blue -- sorry ;-) ]

Poison is out of the question because of the cats and other wildlife. But
every time I see a chipmunk scampering across the snow these days I scold=the
cats and start thinking about "Whack a chipmunk" -- a game similar to "Wh=ack
a Mole". And Glen is a crack shot with the pellet gun . . .
