So here I've been growing arisaemas for all these years without
really knowing what the name means. I was browsing through the
'Dictionary of Plant Names' by Allen Coombes this evening, and found
this:
"From the Greek aron (arum) and haemus (blood) meaning related to arum."
Never would have guessed the blood part.
Another arisaema note worth mentioning is that I took tubers of A.
candidissimum and A. fargesii to my wife's aunt in South Africa when
we visited there last fall. They both bloomed last month (March in SA
is like September here), and caused quite a stir when her gardening
friends came by for a viewing. Perhaps they will get back onto a
regular schedule next season.
