Does taiwanense produce stolons? From a spot where I harvested a tuber last
August for 4 month cold storage there is now a scattering of about 5 6" high
stems each about 4 -6 inches apart. I didn't notice any offset tuberlets when I
dug up last year.
A. taiwanense
#1 - early April '98 from Heronswood already in bloom. Male infl. Pollen on
sikok. (aborted later). Nice "pewtered" (all silvery) leaf in back of the siks
in center Jon's yard. Dug up by rabbit 4/20/99? Replanted..May have died. No
sign 4/15/00.
#2 - In my lath shade structure another one from Heronswood '98. Also 2 small
ones from another source. Coming up 4/28/99. Less than 1' high, no bloom this
year. Dug up Aug. 99 and refridgerated. Taken out early 12/99, paper
wrapping moistened and kept with others in plastic grocery bag loosely closed on
basement floor. Pointing soon. Potted 12/13/99. In lab on shady window by
desk 2/7/00 spadix could be seen coming up. Too cold? Put in humidity
controlled animal room under 12 hr cycle flourescent lighting. 2/14/00 1" coiled
spathe on 1" stem with 1" spadix sticking up. Too small. 2/16/00 center of leaf
can be seen busting out of the cataphyll. May be too damp there. Put in lab
sunny window ~ 2 hrs/day now). Flower 2" on 3" stem with same spadix 2/24/00
Leaf out only a little more. 2/28/00 leaf now above flower 9" high, infl. male.
Pollen wash out with 3ml water in eyedropper for transfer to triphyllum 'Holmdel
Giant' #2 tried 2/28/00 and 3/01/00 but pollen does not appear to be shedding
yet. Fl
ower fading, still can't see loose pollen 3/7/00. Getting sunny window in lab
treatment, Pinellia cordata 'Yamazaki' tuberlet planted with it has 1 leaf and
bloom and doesn't seem to mind the sun either but must start keeping dryer soon
3/20/00. Still good leaf 4/17/00.
#3 - from Heronswood given to George Sternleib in 98.
#4 - from lath refridge. 8/99 - 12/99. Marble sized, in damp paper towel in
plastic shopping bag on cellar floor. Light colored point breaking from dry
marble sized bulb and potted 2/24/00. Too wet? Transferred next to A-63 with
consanguineum #6 3/00. Kept on dry side. Slightly more point expansion 3/16/00.
May have dried out 4/17/00.
#5a & b ? (may be Sauromatum, it was invasive) - from lath, chick pea size.
Refridge 8/99- 4/19/00 potting in Scott's potting soil with fertilizer/perlite
mix (both together), no point visible, and placed in cold frame barely moist
4/19/00. .
# 6,7,&8, & 9, & 10 ??? Does taiwanense produce stolons? From a spot where I
harvested a tuber (#2) last August for 4 month cold storage there is now a
scattering of about 5 6 inch high stems each about 4 -6 inches apart with nice
"pewter" shaded leaves. I didn't notice any offset tuberlets when I dug up last
year.In back of lath against wall, to the right of triphyllum 'Holmdel Giant'
group left under lath (still only in point) , already in leaf 4 - 6" high
4/17/00.
