I have been following Ray's germination reports with great interest and
enjoyment, and thought I would add the news from Alaska.
Of the 15 packets of seed I received from the seed exchange, 9 have
visible leaves. I soaked all seeds for 2 days, and then sowed each
species in it's own community pot made from clear plastic salad container=s
from my local grocery salad bar. I used Pro-mix, and covered the seeds =in
about 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch of grit. Next year I will pre-germinate the
seeds in paper towels, so I have a more scientific record of the
germination. I also forgot to count how many seeds of each I received, =so
I can't give percentages. I'm new at this, and am incredibly excited to
watch the little leaves poke above the grit. I am sure that there has be=en
more germination than what is visible so far. As Ray said, things are
popping!
All seeds were sown February 17th, 1998. As of 3/22/98, here is how
things show;
A. triphyllum 24
consanguineum 10
amur v. amurense 4
sikokianum 3
amurense 2
heterophyllum 2
flavum 1
ringens 1
tortuosum 1
----------------------------------------
amurense v. denticulata 0
bockii 0
peninsulae AIK183 0
sazensoo 0
serratum #1 0
serratum #2 0
----------------------------------------------------------------------
My other arisaemas all came out of dormancy in December, and have been
growing under lights. They started going dormant again about two weeks
ago. I have 3 triphyllums in a gallon community pot, 4 sikokianums in a
pot and one lonely dracontium. One of the sikokianums went dormant a mon=th
ago. The others are slow to follow. They are still green, though they
are beginning to look like they are fading today. The dracontium was the
next to go dormant, and the leaf died back about 2 weeks ago. The
triphyllums are almost finished fading. I have moved the pots to my arct=ic
entryway, where they are getting temperatures that range between 35-45. =I
am hoping that the next month of cool outdoor temps will put them all on =a
regular schedule.
When I had my rust crisis in January, and lost a triphyllum, Ellen Horni=g
generously sent me a whole triphyllum seed head. 60 babies from that
have been growing under lights for a couple months. These were sown
1/12/98 and were all up by 2/1/98.
