Michael,

I think you'd like to get the plants on the natural timetable for
Ontario. So forcing them
to grow in pots would be the last thing you'd want to do. Cool storage in
barely damp chick grit
will delay growth until it would naturally take place if they were in the
ground. Then, if the
bed is still not ready, you might want to pot them up.

I grow Arisaema seedlings in pots in a coldframe, sometimes until they
reach blooming age.
I have used the Gardener's Supply Germinating Mix while they're young.
Then I switch to a
mix of fine ground pine bark and sand with just a tiny bit of fertilizer
as they get older.
Many people use a mix with Turface in it and I think I would too, but
finding the stuff is
difficult here. The nearest place is 50 miles away and they don't
deliver.

I plan to try Gardener's Supply's new Compost + Germinating Mix this
spring.
Hopefully that will eliminate the need for fertilizer and the risk of
leaf burn.
