Jim,
This has, indeed, been one strange and early spring. It began in =mid
February here and just kept gradually gaining momentum through March. It
then slowed a bit with cooler temps and then kicked back into gear. Just =as
all the plants had stuck their noses up the temp dropped to 8 degrees. Ra=n
around protecting what I could, but some damage did occur. Nothing is in
proper sequence this year and most is running a full month ahead of
schedule.
Arisaema sikokianum, of course, reared its head first. I have two=mature
plants and one came up to be killed back severely in spite of protecting
it. It now has one leaf that has resprouted and is trying to maintain som=e
life for the tuber. The second is about 5 feet away and has not emerged
with the exception of what looks like a seedling where the mature plant
should be.
A. ringens came up about the same time as A. sikok., but the prot=ection
held and the two plants are in bloom and have been for a while. The offse=ts
are doing well also.
A. triphyllum in both forms I have are doing well. They did not c=ome up
until after the 8 degree drop, but are still early for here.
A. amurense is a disaster. Both of my mature clumps and the offse=ts are
covered with rust and will be destroyed soon as the rain ends today. All
tubers in the nursery are also being destroyed from the gallon sizes and
the smaller offsets that are coming on for next years blooms.
A. heterophyllum is about 6 inches tall now with a bloom beginnin=g to
emerge. One more is only about two inches and the third remains to break
the surface.
There are many more that normally will not break the surface unti=l the
first of June, but I am not taking any bets on that this year. Be
interesting to see who does what when this spring.
