Jim,
What a nice and faithful description of the pattern on the limb. In S
Japan, Kyushu Island, grows A. serratum var. mayebarae with a dark purple
limb and, usually, five longitudinal white stripes, a wonderful Arisaema.
But in the same batch, you'll see dark and green spathed specimens growin=g
side by side! That's why A. serratum is a species in course of speciation=,
J. Murata says.
I'm not a specialist of orchids but, from what I know, the same occurs wi=th
"species" such as Dactylorhiza maculata and fuchsii and... where all kind
of intermediate forms are growing together in the wild and, as a result,
many specialist consider them synonymous.
