Several years ago while visiting the Seattle area for a NARGS meeting, I =got
seeds from Steve Doonan (Grandrige Nursery) of what he ID'd as A. japonic=um.
The first one has just flowered (under lights) and is quite a beauty.
As I recall from the monograph on the Japanese species, there's a lot of
confusion between this and A. serratum, and GG lists "japonicum" as a syn=onym
of serratum, but this doesn't look at all like the two forms of serratum =that
I already grow (which also don't resemble each other!). The spathe is bla=ck
and white striped (well, maybe dark brown) but the pattern of the white
stripes is exactly like the rising sun that used to be painted on Zeros. =(I
guess I'm dating myself!). The spadix is very dark also, slightly speckl=ed,
and has a bulbous tip.
I'll probably end up sending a slide to Guy for ID, but does anyone grow =one
that sounds like this?
