Dear all,
Have just come back from China and checked the hundreds of emails that have
built up over the last 6 and a half weeks. I have changed my opinion on how
I will grow Arisaemas in future but couldn't resist getting in on the thread
about tubers/rhizomes burying themselves.
I hypothesised this practise some years ago but believe that it is not only
root action. Many tubers have the old section rot off each year. This is
always on the bottom. My question is why?
I suggest that they are looking for moisture. Most of the Arisaema species
that we encountered were basically growing on the surface (under a layer of
stones or moss). But they are from high rainfall areas!! Where the plants
were growing in more exposed or dryer areas the tubers were deeper.
Open to ideas.
