cool summer areas

Scott's message about wintergreen plants from hot summer areas doing
poorly in our cool summers explains why I have had plants looking great
through the winter and then just disappearing in the spring. I tried
growing xpardancanda (?) from seed several times, and never saw them
bloom. I finally gave up. I wonder if early spring fertilizing would help?

The problem I have with Arisaema is sandy soil and summer drought. A.
flavum grows very well, jacquemontii is OK, with black plastic under its
bed,and amurense has flowered yearly in a pot - it goes in to an April
flower show every year, and despite good intentions, I have never gotten
around to putting some in the ground. As for A. triphyllum - that is
definitely NOT a "given" here, but I keep trying. Maybe I should plant
it in the pond. I am developing an artificial boggy area for all my
seedlings. It will be included in the automatic watering system.
