I bought three of the above at the NARGS meeting in January from Barry
Yinger, and all are flowering. According to Guy Gusman's recent article in
the Alpine Garden Society's Bulletin, one appears to be the type species and
the other two are var. nakaianum, which is much more striking in appearance,
and considerably larger.

Interestingly, the latter two are males, and the other a female which may be
setting seed. The two males are the most likely sources of pollen (no other
species are nearby). If so, I'm wondering what the next generation will look
like? Guy, have you seen a cross between the two varieties? Does it happen in
Japan, or do they not intermingle in the wild?

I'll keep you all posted on developments, and I hope that Guy will post
something on the subject.
