You say you're not ready to experiment with hardiness yet. So, you've
answered your own question. If you don't experiment, then you have to dig
up the tubers.

I suggest you dig a wide swath around the site and gently work toward the
expected spot to prevent damaging the tubers.

If you read what the Illingworths grow near Thunder Bay in Canada, you
might find that some of your tubers are hardy (no experiment required).
But, I expect they have snow cover.  Why not ask them?
