WWW-archives

At least some good news about the WWW archives of our list! This is a
message that I did receive from Surfnet today:

Dear Listowner,

In a previous message about the SURFnet Listserv migration, dated November
25 1997, we wrote:

> Please note that access to these archives is limited to end-users of
> SURFnet-connected organisations.

Partly due to the outcome of the SURFnet Contact Persons Meeting, last
Tuesday, we would like to make two remarks on the access restriction of the
WWW-accessible list archives:

- SURFnet will investigate whether closed listserv list archives (i.e.
archives that can only be accessed by subscribers of the related list) may
also be accessed via WWW. These archives will however remain protected with
a username-password combination.

Listowners of closed lists who are interested in this service are invited
to take part in a pilot of this service that will take place
in the beginning of 1998.
Please register at info at surfnet.nl if you want to join this initiative.

- Pending the investigation mentioned above, SURFnet has decided not to
shield the WWW-accessible archives for non-SURFnet users, which means that
for the time being, the WWW-archives will be open to all users. In case
SURFnet decides to restrict the access to the WWW-archives after all, you
will be notified well in advance.
