I find T. catesbaei difficult to grow in typical garden soils along with other sessile species....possibly because the soil is amended with calcium every year.  It does grow in the pine duff that surrounds two large pine trees and it grows very well in peat-based mixes (e.g., Fafard3B, MetroMix 360) provided the mix is refreshed every year or so.
