Hi, Aaron, could your shrub-small tree be pawpaw?  It does sucker and ha=s light green banana like fruit with leaves that could look like the deci=dious magnolia.  It is very nice to smell, leaves, twigs and the zebra bu=tterflies use it for caterpillars.
