Lois's red berry just arrived. From gross morphology and internal =
structure it is a T.erectum or a close relative.

BERRY DIMENSIONS: height, 18mm; width, 17mm; 6 very short wings =
<<0.5mm high that extend 10 to 11 mm (about 2/3 of the way) down the =
sides of the berry from the top.

BERRY DESCRIPTION: The 6 wings divide the surface into 6 unequal =
segments. The narrow segments terminate at the dried stigmas which are =
about 2mm away from the central axis of the berry. The dried stigmas are ==
2-3mm long. The wide segments meet at the central axis. The wide =
segments are purplish-red with small blotches of yellow-green; The =
narrow segments are all purplish-red. Seed outlines are NOT visible =
through the berry wall.

BERRY INTERIOR: On transverse section the berry wall is about 1mm thick ==
with a pink interior wall Three placentas are attached to the berry =
wall for its entire height. The attachment is centered on the 3 wide =
segments of the berry. Seeds are attached by large arils to the inner =
edge of each placenta.

SEEDS: 79 well developed seeds were in the berry. The arils were large =
and, like the placentas, were beginning to decompose. A typical seed =
measured 3x2mm. A typical aril was 3x2x1mm. The weight of all 79 seeds ==
plus their arils was 1.12g, or 14.2mg/seed+aril. Seed weight alone will ==
be measured after aril removal. It is expected that the aril will be =
about half or more of the diaspore(seed+aril) weight.

SEPALS: dried and incomplete. no analysis possible.

COMMENTS: The fleshy berry wall, short stigma segments, color, obscure =
ridges, wall-attached placentas, small seeds are all features I =
associate with erectum type trillium fruits. The red berry had no =
characters I would normally associate with T.grandiflorum.
