Hello Otfried,

thanks much for the hint, indeed it is the locale!

Setting LC_NUMERIC to C (was sk_SK.utf8) did the trick. US locale works
okay, too. I figure it ought to be related to the convention that we
(sk_SK and related locales) use comma instead of period as the decimal
separator.

I hope the next person hitting the issue will be able to google the
cause and workaround in the archives now.
