[Ipe-discuss] using different layers for different figure versions

That's perfectly reasonable.  For instance, have the common part of the 
figures in layer alpha, and the non-common parts in beta and gamma. 
Then create two views, one showing alpha+beta, the other alpha+gamma. 
Save as PDF.   This will give you a PDF file with two pages 
corresponding to your two figures.  You can use them from pdflatex by 
saying things like "\includegraphics[page=2]{file}".

The next version of ipetoipe will also have a feature to split an Ipe 
file into several files (when exporting).
