For the invalid xml string bug :

    <ipeselection>
    <path stroke="black" pen="normal">
    1 m
    1 2 l
    </path>
    </ipeselection>

You can reproduce the bug with the former xml string. It is invalid 
because it lacks a number on the third line ( before the m )
Here is the debug output :

    ipe: ipepath.cpp:1077: IpePath::IpePath(IpeRepository*, const
    IpeXmlAttributes&, IpeString): Assertion `args.size() == 2' failed.
    Aborted

Note that this bug occurs with my ipelet but although with the standard 
Ctrl-C/Ctrl-V way of adding objects.
