[Arisaema-l] seed pod question

Back in the day, when I was so thrilled to get a seed pod on sikokianum, they wouldn't "mature".....turn red..... until well into winter. With the snow, freezing & thawing that was inevitable in Ithaca, it was nerve wracking to let them go on & probably lose them. So eventually, I'd pick them before they matured & keep them in water, till they turned red; then I picked them but didn't wait at all until they turned red. I planted "green" seeds & they did just fine. I don't know where the line is between seeds that are indeed green & immature, but when the seeds in the pod are full size, but still green, they seem fine. This was usually sometime late autumn. It may well be that the seeds do some maturing after this point but it's not necessary for germination in my experience. I did wonder why the outer layer seemed to develop or mature at a different rate than the seeds. Could the red be an indicator that I'm ready to be eaten?

For the first time I have at least some seed from my A. kishidae, a Japanese species that does well here. The stem withered and I brought the green pod inside, and opened a couple of berries and it seemed like good seed inside. But do not want to harvest before the seeds are viable.
Robin, what do you mean about "keeping in water"? I have found much better germination rate from seeds I plant if they are soaked in water for a day or two before planting, but I am not sure that is what you are talking about.

In my experience, mostly, but not only with sikokianum, the seeds are ripe well before they turn completely red, so it might be worth pulling a seed or two off to look at them & maybe avoid all the fuss of keeping in water, etc.
