[Arisaema-l] no AEG seeds arrived

Dear Aad,

First of all, let me express my admiration for the methodical way in which you have kept the seeds separated and were then able to report such detailed statistics.  I attempted this, using an excel spread sheet, but soon lost track of everything.  And I am (used to be, anyway) a trained, professional accountant.  Now, in my 70's, I am lucky if I can remember where I placed the containers the previous year, much less what is in them.

Secondly, let me inquire as to when you planted the seed.  I receive AEG seed in April and plant the Arum seed the following August - September, but do not plant the Arisaema seed until the following February - April.  For example, Arisaema seed harvested in 2012, distributed in 2013, will not be planted until 2014.  That means the seed is two years old when planted.  This is necessary because in my climate, the day time temperatures will often exceed 100 degrees F. by late June or early July and most Arisaema do not grow well at that temperature.

As to storing the results, I might suggest that you leave the Arum in their containers and store them in a location where they will receive the least summer heat and rain.  I have done this with my mature Arum tubers and it works fine.  I have not tried this for Arisaema, but have harvested the bubils and stored them in a paper bag inside until the following Spring.  I planted the bubils in small containers and they then sprouted with no problem, however due to my ever changing Spring temperatures (some days cold and some days very warm), most had a very short growing period.  Next year, I plan on placing them in larger containers to see if that makes a difference.

As to the Arum bubils, I left the seedlings in their container, but after the container had dried, I stored it inside.  When I went to plant them in my garden (cold frame) this year, many had desiccated.  Next year, I plan on storing the bubils in the same way that I had stored the mature tubers (outside in an area where they will receive the least summer hear and rain).

At a recommendation from this list, I left two Arum pictum seedlings (Majorican form) in their containers and placed them inside on a window sill and they grew all summer.  They are now putting out nearly mature leaves.

I hope my experiences are of some use to you.

Thanks. I will stick with the dryish perlite for the arisaema's. 

Next year I will let know how things have worked out for me.

The question that I raised was only for the arisaema's. For all the other species I did take a quick look at the tubers and then replanted them in larger containers that are still standing outside. The arum, dranculus and helicodiceros will remain outside during the winter in a coldframe. The sauromatum, pinellia and zanthedeschia will be stored dry in a frostfree spot until they sprout again end winter, early spring depending on the warmth of the spot they are stored.

Hi Aad,
I found that storing the tubers in dryish perlite in bags worked fine for me.
I worry about rotting things if there is too much moisture.
Others I left in their pots with no irrigation until Spring.
I have had success with both of these methods.
Some of the bagged tubers went into the refrigerator and they came out of dormancy earlier than the others.

As I'm new to arisaema I ordered most of the items on the seedEx list of 2013. Just to get started so to speak.
Based on the experience of David I was skeptic about the the germination of the different species.

But 3 weeks ago I harvested all my 1 year seedlings and was very surprised of the yield and the percentage of species germinated.

For the arisaema I will split them in one half that goes in the refrigerator for two months to speed up the growing cycle and the other half that I will store for next year.

My question is what is the best way to store the tubers.
	* For the ones that goes in the refrig. I will put them in ziplock bags but should the bags be filled with slightly moist perlite, nothing or something else?
	* For the ones that are stored outside the refig. Do I store them best in bags at roomtemperature, bags at bedroom temperature or even lower temparture? Should I store them dry or wrapped in moist perlite or towels in either paperbags or ziplock bags?

Seed arrived today, May 17th, in Fort Worth, Texas, USA, via the USDA Inspection station in Houston, TX.  I also would like to express my gratitude to Eric and others (?) for all of the work and to those who donate the seed.  I am hoping that next year I will be able to donate as well as receive.

Rather than dwell on the failure of the seed to germinate, I like bask in the excitement of those which did.  While I planted around 200 Arum seed and only have ten seedlings, I am very excited about each of those ten.  I was a little more successful with Arisaema, and very successful with the Pinellia (ternata has not yet sprouted).

My question to those living in the northern hemisphere is when do you plant the seed?  By now, Spring has about sprung and the really hot days of summer are only weeks away (my Arum are dormant, except for the seedlings), only one Arisaema has sprouted, and the Pinellia are all sprouted and doing well.

As always, I appreciate any response.
