Leaf Count, Scent & so forth & so on

First, I was just wondering if there's been any study of variable leaf co=unt
from season to season. What precipitates a change from one growth cycle t=o
the next within the same plant? Is it tied to size & health of the co=rm like sex?
I ask because two of my urashima have two leaves this year when they've =
never had anything but one for 5 years running. Last year I had a kiushia=num
with two leaves and now it has one.

Second, I was wondering about any scents people might have come across as=
the spathe unfurls. I'm no somalier but I do have a very good sense of sm=ell.
I've noticed all kinds of interesting, faint smells present for various p=eriods of
time after things open up. Sometimes the scent may only be present on one=
plant in a grouping. Sometimes one plant will last for less than an hour =while
an adjacent one will smell for many days.

I have an urashima that's smelled faintly of Raid bug spray for the last =twelve
hours. Last season about 30% of my mayebarae had brief episodes of soap &=amp;
citrus scents as well as some A. thunbergii sub. thunbergii that smelled =weakly
of honeysuckle for a week. A lot of the Section Arisaema species have had=a
sort of wet greenhouse soil or tannin laden water smell to them...

Anyhow, it's interesting stuff & I look forward to any experiences fo=lks have
with these matters.

-Erick
