Hi, Nic - I've always had a fascination with arisaemas since seeing them ==
in Nepal away back in 1977 but only started into them seriously when I =
collected seed in Bhutan in 1990. I grow all you mention but various =
others too like jacquemontii, costatum, echinatum, engleri, wardii, =
erubescens, intermedium, galeatum, formosanum, saxatile, taiwanense, =
ternipartitum, wilsonii and probably some more I can't remember! I have =
a particular fascination with speciosum var. mirabile. I try to keep as =
few in pots as I can but conditions here with very heavy poorly drained =
soil and high rainfall are not too helpful!
If you bought your plants as dry corms, some may be wrongly named which =
can be a problem for new growers but I'm sure you'll soon become aware =
of all that!
Anne

Hi Anne - thanks!
A. candidissimum
A. ciliatum
A. griffithii
A. fargesii
A. kiusianum
A. nepenthoides
A. sikokianum
A. speciosum
A. speciosum (sold as "magnificum" which I know is an invalid variety =
though it is noticeably larger than the other speciosum)
A. thunbergii ursahima
A. tortuosum
A. utile
Originally I planted them out rekoning an ornamental cherry would =
provide just the dappled shade I was after, however, the cherry has =
turned out to be half dead, leaving them in full sun so I have had to =
move them to another bed. We're on London clay here so I've excavated =
about two foot down and used plenty of grit and perlite in the mix, =
however, after this season is over I think I need to re-do the bed and =
layer it to improve drainage further. Having said that all of the =
tubers I bought seem to be doing well, though I am having to be very =
careful indeed about watering/over-watering!
How long have you been growing them and which varieties?
Nic

Subject: A New Member's "Hello"
Hi Everyone
This is a quick note to introduce myself as a new member of AEG. My =
name is Nic and I live in Barnet, UK. I am 37, married, with 6-year old =
twins. We moved house last October to a new with garden that had =
largely overgrown. After 3 months worth of evening and weekend =
clearance work we finally got all the weeds and ivy out and discovered, =
as expected, that we had some sizeable stretches of bed that were a =
blank canvas. Several of these were very shady areas and as I searched =
for plants to suit these areas I came across Arisaema. I was =
immediately attracted to these, due to the beautiful stems as much as =
much as the flowers themselves. After scouring the internet for more =
information and preparing the ground I went looking for plants and have =
found a couple of nurseries (one very local, luckily). I now have 14 =
plants of which 13 are different varieties. These are in various stages ==
of maturity and are currently in various stages of growth. All are =
doing well and I remain fascinated with them.
Thank you for accepting a "first year novice" into your ranks. I =
hope to learn a lot more from the articles on the AEG website, and hope =
to be able to put something back in via seed donations in due course!
Regards
Nic
