How do I post an image in the Gallery?? I have a photo of foliage that
may be virused which I tried to send to the list but it was returned.
Here is my text from that message:
****
The foliage on this arisaema looks virused to me .... opinions? I just
located it this morning, and it seems to be the only suspicious looking
foliage around it. The leaves at the lower left are a different
variegated plant with much more variegation than on the rest of the
plant! Might that be a virus, too?
The American Hosta Society is funding study of Hosta Virus X and I just
spent the weekend at an event at which much discussion and a workshop
were presented. HVX is one of perhaps 7 viruses found on Hosta.
The foliage in this photo does not look like HVX, but it wouldn't
because HVX only affects Hosta. Many of the same principles apply,
however, to viruses in general. First -- the virus doesn't go away from
the affected plant, so it should be discarded. Second, it spreads by
transferring the "sap", which may be available by touching the foliage
... foliage with "hairs" produces sap when those hairs are broken. Sap
from smooth textured plants might be more difficult to become evident,
but great care is needed! HVX does not exist in or spread to the soil.
The AHS has found a reliable source for virus test strips that home
gardeners can use to detect various virus.
I am going to dig up this tuber, put it in a plastic bag and discard it
in the garbage. If it turns out NOT to be a virus, I will be happy, and
hope none of the other arisaemas show such symptoms.
