Hi Russell,

>Seems like the list was rather quiet this past spring. Anyway, I
thought I'd take a minute and report on my progress from the Gulf Coast.

For those not familiar with US zones, I'm zone 7 in Atlanta and Russ who
lives 4 to 5 hours south of me by speeding car is probably zone 8. We
are thus quite similar, although Atlanta is a little colder in the
winter. My experience with Arisaema in pots is different from Russ's.
I must be holding my mouth differently as fishermen would say. I can't
be specific with all my names so I know that my posting has limited
value. One of these years I will get out with the Arisaema book and try
to confirm some id's. Here's a few things that I think are right:

In pots
I have numerous Arisaema in pots, including flavum, candidissimum, and
sikokianum to name a few along with several amorphophallus. I use a
soil-less mix, either Fafard3B or Sunshine, haphazardly amended to
increase drainage. Recently, I've been resting the tuber on Turface to
give better drainage and this really helped with sikokianum. Plants are
not watered until I see growth emerging so in many cases this is May,
well after spring has arrived in Atlanta. I have others in pots but
can't confirm their id. Last year I got lazy and just left all the pots
on the front porch but protected from winter rains. They survived
Atlanta's freezing nights down to about 15 F (-9 C) just fine.

In the garden
There are numerous Chinese and one Japanese Arisaema in the garden that
do fine, including Arisaema fargesii, franchetianum, taiwanense,
candidissimum, urashima, and possibly costatum (tentative id), along
with several unidentified Chinese green-flowered species.

Russ, I'm not advocating that you go back to pots. Your higher humidity
may be the culprit. If anything, I ignore my Arisaema and water when I
see other garden plants becoming stressed because of our drought. Plus,
90 F weather and the mosquitoes tend to drive me indoors to the cool of
air-conditioning.

I'll add that I'm trying a slew of the new Thai caladium in pots from
Asiatica. What riotous color. These have to be grown in pots or lifted
from the garden come cold weather.
