Hi Ernie,
Just last year I also had a bumper crop of seed from my
variegated plants. So, at harvest I divided them all roughly in two &
cleaned one lot but not the other. Because the cleaned seeds took
longer to clean up the two lots were not planted at exactly the same
time, maybe a week apart, but the cleaned seeds germinated around a
month later, probably around 90% success. The uncleaned were much
slower & still only about 50% success. Because I know there are still
many ungerminated seeds for the uncleaned group, I haven't potted
them on, unlike the cleaned seeds. I have found that other uncleaned
seed will also germinate (ringens) but no control.
Robin Bell, Ithaca New York, zone 5 & raining.
